The Bechdel Test Becomes a Bigger Deal

I was stunned (in a good way) to see that the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly (cover-dated August 13) had a full-page column about this. Mark Harris’ column, entitled “I Am Woman. Hear Me… Please!” (which apparently isn’t available online) attacks Hollywood movies for how often they fail the Bechdel Test. In this simple evaluation, first formulated by cartoonist Alison Bechdel (Fun Home, Dykes to Watch Out For) in this comic 25 (!) years ago, a film passes if it […]

DC Showcase Shorts Collection Announced With New Captain Marvel Cartoon

I’ve enjoyed the DC Showcase cartoons as much or more as the longer animated features they come attached to. Now, Warner Home Video has announced a collection of four of those shorts. To drive purchase of what many superhero animation fans already have, they’re including a previously unseen debut short with Captain Marvel (aka Shazam). The DC Showcase Original Shorts Collection, available November 9, will contain four cartoons: The Spectre (originally released with Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths) Jonah […]

Batman: Under the Red Hood (DVD Review)

Batman: Under the Red Hood is the latest original DC Animated movie, written by Judd Winick based on his graphic novel telling the story of a new, more violent vigilante. The Red Hood challenges Batman’s methods for cleaning up Gotham City, but what is the historical connection between the two? There’s nothing like sitting down to watch a superhero cartoon and opening on a scene of a demented clown beating a teen boy to near-death with a crowbar, then blowing […]

Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy Due October 26

I know I was annoyed by Blu-ray for a while, but I think we picked just the right time to jump, since lots of our favorites are just now being re-released in that format. And as the studios hoped, since we have a new Blu-ray player, we’re eager for content to feed into it. The latest announcement that has me salivating is that the Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy is due out on Blu-ray October 25th (my birthday […]

Marvel Launching Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Cartoon

Marvel has announced that their The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes animated series will debut this fall on their parent company’s Disney XD channel (three years after production on the 26 half-hour episodes started — cartoons take time!). As can be seen from this promotional image, they’re pushing hard on the characters known from the (existing or upcoming) movies: Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America. Thankfully, the promo video trailer (no longer available) shows that Ant-Man/Giant-Man and the Wasp (hey! […]

Lost: The Complete Collection Due August 24

I have a confession to make: the major reason KC wanted our new Blu-ray player for his birthday was because he enjoys watching Lost, and he’s already anticipating Lost: The Complete Collection, out next month on August 24. The big appeal for fans like him is that the set contains additional story material, which will make this a must-have for any dedicated viewer. If you’re not a Blu-ray fan, the set is also available on DVD. Here’s the official content […]

Super Friends! Season One, Volume Two

After several other DVD releases from different eras of the show, Super Friends! Season One, Volume Two returns to the earliest days of the cartoon. It’s a minimal set, two discs, eight episodes, from the first season, featuring Wendy, Marvin, and Wonderdog. Along with its companion Volume One, the two sets contain all the hour-long episodes (about 45 minutes here, without commercials) that launched the show in 1973. Modern viewers or those new to the show will likely find these […]

Scott Pilgrim Rocks!

I am spending the weekend re-reading the Scott Pilgrim books: Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Scott Pilgrim & the Infinite Sadness Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe Links go to my reviews, which looked at now, are shallower than I would like, because it took me years and multiple re-reads to truly appreciate what Bryan Lee O’Malley was doing with the series and characters. He’s created the defining comic series of […]
