Batman: Under the Red Hood Due in July

The next direct-to-DVD original animated movie featuring DC Comics characters will be Batman: Under the Red Hood, available July 27, 2010. Today, Warner Home Video released the following trailer. The premise is described as “Batman confronts new enemies, old foes and painful memories when a powerful vigilante [Red Hood] with a penchant for violence comes to Gotham City”. Batman is voiced by Bruce Greenwood, with Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) as Red Hood and Neil Patrick Harris as Nightwing. Judd Winick wrote […]

Iron Man 2: Stark Expo

To promote the upcoming Iron Man 2 movie, out May 7, Marvel has created the Stark Expo 2010 site (no longer available). In the world of the film, Tony Stark’s father originally started the Expo as a way to demonstrate “better living through technology”. Now, Tony is relaunching the event to “explore the technological wonders that will enhance lives everywhere.” I like this approach. We’ve lost the magic of world fairs as ways to bring people together, and it’s a […]

Ghost Whisperer Features Graphic Novelist

Set the TiVo! On Friday, April 2, at 8 PM Eastern time, the CBS show Ghost Whisperer will feature a story about a graphic novelist. The plot is described as “A graphic novelist’s livelihood — and life — are threatened when a vengeful ghost takes over his pen, using it to predict violent events that start to come true.” (Too bad we couldn’t get a female artist, hunh?) There’s a short video promo on YouTube. In the episode, a successful […]

Steel and the Warner Archive

The Warner Archive DVD-on-demand program has expanded its coverage. Now it’s not just old movies but includes fan favorites or early work by known stars from all decades. For example, I just received for review a kitschy favorite of mine, the 1997 Steel. You can buy Steel beginning April 6. Although the DVDs are made to order, based on this, they’re very professional in quality, with attractive cover art, a standard-looking informative back cover, and image on the disc itself. […]

Sherlock Holmes

I hadn’t seen this Victorian action movie in theaters, so I was glad to see the DVD come out only three months later. I knew there’d been lots of debate over whether this version was really Sherlock Holmes or not, and I wanted to see for myself. The movie doesn’t play much on what Holmes has come to mean as a brand, but since it’s billed as a “bold reimagining”, fair enough. The Sherlock Holmes film is faithful to the […]

Scott Pilgrim Movie Looks Amazing!

The movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, based on the graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O’Malley, is due out on August 13. Based on this trailer, it looks fantastic. The special effects are great, capturing the brilliant blend of video game thinking into slacker lifestyle, and I’m particularly impressed by how faithful the characters look. Comics Alliance has a wonderful comparison post in which they show off the seven evil exes. I’m impressed at who they got to play […]

Ponyo

Ponyo is the newest Studio Ghibli movie to come to DVD in the U.S. Thanks to Ed’s laptop, I was able to sample this in Blu-ray. (Although we had a bit of trouble getting the thing to talk to my television. I thought it would be as simple as plugging in the cable to the HDMI port, but it seems that you have to disable the laptop screen to get the TV image to show; otherwise, the software gives you […]

She’s Out of My League

She’s Out of My League opens on Friday, but I was lucky enough to see a preview earlier this week. I recommend it. When it comes to R-rated comedy romances, I’m never sure what to expect. Some of them are raunchfests or expect you to find laughs in watching a bunch of potheads kill time. This one takes a different direction. While quite funny, it also has a sense of heart. Fundamentally, it’s an ugly duckling love story, the tale […]
