Vera Brosgol’s Next Books Announced

Publishers Weekly has announced that Vera Brosgol, author of the impressive coming-of-age ghost story Anya’s Ghost, will be publishing three books with Macmillan Children’s Books. Of most interest to me is a middle-grade graphic memoir, Be Prepared, “that recounts the author’s time at a Russian Orthodox summer camp in Upstate New York.” I enjoy stories of people finding themselves, particularly with a distinctive cultural overlay. Out first, though, is Leave Me Alone!, a picture book described as a modern folktale. […]

The Manga Guide to Regression Analysis

The latest in this line of educational comics is The Manga Guide to Regression Analysis. It’s written by Shin Takahashi, the author of The Manga Guide to Statistics, one of the earliest of similar works translated over here, with art by Iroha Inoue. Never have I seen such an adorable way to learn higher-level mathematical techniques. Regression analysis, as the preface tells us, consists of “statistical methods for predicting values”. The main example used here involves two waitresses at a […]

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma Volume 12

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma volume 12, story by Yuto Tsukuda and art by Shun Saeki, finally brings us to the cooking competition finals, a challenge that began in volume 6. Because the judges couldn’t pick a winner in the semi-final competition in the previous book, for the first time, there will be three competitors in the last cook-off, another way to extend the storytelling. Our hero Soma, the champion of “common cuisine”, is facing off against Kurokiba, a bad […]

Batman: Gotham Adventures #13 Made Me Cry

KC was sorting through some boxes of comics and pulled out Batman: Gotham Adventures #13 (cover-dated June 1999) because it’s more than just a cartoon-look-inspired adventure. I’ll tell you why. But first, since personalities will be so important to understanding what the story is really about, it’s written by Kelley Puckett and illustrated by Rick Burchett and Terry Beatty. It stars, as the villains, the trio of Mastermind, the Perfesser, and Mr. Nice, together known as the Threatening Three. That’s […]

Josie and the Pussycats Relaunch Series Announced

To go along with new #1s and storylines for Archie and Jughead (and soon, Betty & Veronica), Archie Comics has announced an all-new Josie and the Pussycats series, launching September 28. The comic will be set in “the New Riverdale”, along with the other series mentioned above. Co-written by Marguerite Bennett (DC Comics Bombshells, Insexts) and Cameron DeOrdio (with a journalism and PR background, I couldn’t find a comic credit for him), the art by Audrey Mok, as seen in […]

A Kickstarter Worth Supporting, Particularly for Medical Memoir Readers

Tyler Page is tackling a fascinating subject in Raised on Ritalin: A Personal Story of ADHD, Medication, and Modern Psychiatry, a graphic memoir that will also be of interest to those who enjoy comics about medical topics. In addition to his own experiences being on drugs for ADD for much of his life, Tyler promises to tell “the story of ADD/ADHD itself — the origins and development of the diagnosis and its treatments including drugs like Ritalin and Adderall, as […]

Vixen Coming to Legends of Tomorrow

Via CBR, here’s a link to some DC TV news: Vixen, the animal-powered superhero, will be joining DC’s Legends of Tomorrow in its next season. The character has previously appeared on an episode of the fourth season of Arrow as well as having her own short animated web series (which has a second season coming). The problem here is casting. The cartoon was voiced by Megalyn Echikunwoke, who also played the live-action version, as shown here in a promo art […]

Written Off: A Mysterious Detective Mystery

I enjoyed E.J. Copperman’s Asperger’s mystery The Question of the Missing Head so much that when I found out he was launching a new series, this time starring a female author, I jumped at the chance to read it. And I was not disappointed. Written Off features Rachel Goldman, a mid-list mystery writer who’s in revisions on her fifth book. Her series character is Duffy Madison, a Holmesian police consultant who is scarily skilled at finding missing people. He’s direct, […]
