Kodansha (Vertical) Titles Come to ComiXology

I’m not sure I fully understand the business arrangement behind this, but a number of manga titles published here by Vertical have just become available on ComiXology. You have to look under Kodansha as the publisher, though, because they’re licensed by Vertical from Kodansha Ltd. and are being distributed by Kodansha’s US digital operation, Kodansha Advanced Media. (And good on them for working through what could have been complicated business aspects to make more manga available digitally and legally!) Those […]

Michael Uslan has been involved with superhero movies, specifically Batman films, for a long while now. He’s been a producer from the 1989 Tim Burton Batman to the much-anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice due out next year. (They aren’t all as great, unfortunately. His credits also include Catwoman, The Spirit, and the Swamp Thing movies and TV show. His next project, funded by a Chinese media group, will bring the Thunder Agents, originally published by Tower Comics in […]

Margaret Atwood Writing Series of All-Ages Graphic Novels

Renowned author Margaret Atwood (The Handmaid’s Tale, The Blind Assassin) is writing a three-volume graphic novel series called Angel Catbird. The all-ages books will be illustrated by Johnnie Christmas (Sheltered) and published by Dark Horse beginning in fall 2016. TV Finales FAQ

All That’s Left to Know About the Endings of Your Favorite TV Shows TV Finales FAQ brought back a lot of fond memories for me, in two distinct categories. The first was that of watching many of the various TV shows covered. The second was when I used to scarf up books like this one, media surveys and volumes of pop culture trivia, back before we had the internet for that purpose. I’ve missed these kinds of volumes (although my […]

Fruits Basket Returns to US

Yen Press has announced that they will be bringing Fruits Basket back to the US. The 23 volumes of Fruits Basket by Netsuke Takuya were originally published here by Tokyopop from 2004-2009. It was immensely popular, a huge bestseller in both Japan and the US, and demonstrated the potential value of the manga market in North America, particularly in bookstores. It also showed how much of a buying force female readers could be. It’s the story of an orphan who […]

iZombie Takes on the Superhero

I really like watching iZombie. The TV show combines an ongoing story (how does Liv learn to handle her transformed existence, now that she’s been infected, and should she tell her family and friends, some of whom are involved with those who want to exploit the condition for their own power?) with a weekly murder case, which Liv helps solve by eating the victim’s brains. That action gives her flashes of their memories — and Rose McIver, who plays Liv, […]

The Format’s the Thing

A KC Column by KC Carlson In my latest column over at the Westfield Blog, I discussed the new hardcover collection of All-New X-Men Volume 3. Part of my reason for discussing this particular book is that it’s one of the most current books published in what has become, at least for me, my favorite format for collected books. It doesn’t (as yet) have a zippy marketing-friendly name like “Prestige” or “Omnibus”; for now, it’s just referred to as “oversize” […]
