Interview With Batton Lash, Author of Supernatural Law: Zombie Wife

If I’m remembering correctly, I first “met” Batton Lash, author and artist of Supernatural Law, way back in my CompuServe days, twenty or so years ago. It’s easy to take such a consistent, long-running series for granted, but Batton is constantly keeping up with the latest comic marketing methods, from introductory issues to reprint collections to moving to the web. Now, he’s running a Kickstarter to print the latest series graphic novel, Zombie Wife and Other Tales of Supernatural Law. […]

Today Is Free Comic Book Day 2014!

Today, May 3, is Free Comic Book Day! KC and I will be helping out at the East Side location of Westfield Comics. I hope you’ll come by and say hi! There are 57 titles available this year, so there should be something for everyone. (Note that Free Comic Book Day isn’t free for retailers, so please don’t be greedy, and if your store is having a special sale or event, check to see if there’s something you want to […]

Smut Peddler 2014 Kickstarter in Final 3 Days

There are fewer than three days to go on the Kickstarter for Smut Peddler 2014. The project has raised over $145,000, most of which is going to the creators and contributors in the form of bonuses, over $1,200 each (which are much appreciated). There’s still time to order your preferred format (print or digital) of this outstanding, women-friendly porn anthology. You can see some sample pages in this interview with C. Spike Trotman, guiding force, as well as finding out […]

C2E2: My Wrapup

My last few comic shows have been arts festival-style, focused on artist appearances and their self-created comics, so it was a bit of a shock to attend a much bigger, much louder, more traditional “let’s look at stuff” comic convention in C2E2 2014. I think of these types of shows as similar to Disneyland — people attend to see the sights, whether it’s cosplayers, big booths, celebrities, or presentations of what publishers have coming next. (ICv2 felt similarly: “The nature […]

DC Thinks Comics Are Trading Cards, Only Covers Matter

DC had great success with their “Villains Month” gimmick last year, in which they put out a limited number of 3-D lenticular covers to boost sales and make it seem like their books were in high demand. This is comics, so if a gimmick works, people keep repeating it until it’s beaten into the ground. DC’s doing the 3-D cover thing again next September, this time as a part of “Futures End“, a look into the future of the DCU. […]

C2E2: Athlitacomics Brings Protectors #1, Win a Copy Signed by Israel Idonije

Israel Idonije, Chicago Bears defensive lineman, appeared at C2E2 to debut a special limited edition #1 of his series The Protectors, put out by Athlitacomics. Idonije came up with the idea during training camp years ago. The series combines two basic concepts — sports heroes and super heroes — into an adventure where athletic stars get superpowers. The comic is created by two long-standing professionals; Ron Marz writes and Bart Sears draws. Marz, when I spoke to him, was excited […]

C2E2: Mark Waid, Comics Retailer vs. Mark Waid, Digital Publisher

I went to two panels at C2E2. One was on Digital Comics; the other was titled “Mark Waid, Comics Retailer vs. Mark Waid, Digital Publisher”, which I thought was the best panel title ever. As Waid explained, he launched Thrillbent.com, a digital comics site, in 2012 with John Rogers (Leverage, Blue Beetle). Digital comics were considered by some retailers to mean the death of print, the end of comics as we knew them overnight. Last year, Waid bought a comic […]

Bravo to CBR. In an open letter from owner Jonah Weiland, Comic Book Resources has announced that they’re shutting down their existing message boards and replacing them with a Community that “will show zero tolerance for intimidation or abuse of all members of the community, regardless of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, and gender identification. CBR and all areas of its website and operations will be a safe space for all people, of all levels of involvement.” Here are key […]
