Congratulations to Dark Horse Digital on Its Third Anniversary; Gifts Go to Fans

To celebrate its three-year anniversary, Dark Horse Digital has announced two special offers for customers! Their digital comic program launched April 27, 2011, going to same-day release dates at the end of that year. They’re the only comic publisher with a stand-alone, self-maintained digital comic store and cross-platform reader app. All this weekend, digital purchases are 50% off (which makes them $2 instead of $3.99). However, if you’re planning a shopping spree, sign up for their newsletter first, and get […]

Happy 10th Anniversary, 24 Hour Comics Day!

According to this detailed interview with Nat Gertler, founder of 24 Hour Comics Day, today is the 10th anniversary of the event (now held in October). I liked several observations in this piece by Tim O’Shea. First is capturing how much of a “let’s put on a show in the barn!” attitude there still is in comics, and how it often works to make things happen. Also, there’s a neat synchronicity in how working to solve problems — Nat was […]

Marvel at C2E2: I Don’t Think That Means What You Think That Means

I’m madly getting ready for C2E2 tomorrow — my visit to the show is going to be crazy since I only have Friday available — so I’m paying attention to the various press releases and appearances being announced. Then I got this Marvel announcement: the Marvel Booth (Booth #327) is going to be the place to be all weekend, with the hottest creators in the industry bringing fans all that they’ve been craving and more! Over the course of the […]

Amazon Buys ComiXology

It’s the perfect news story. There’s a shocking fact — Amazon has acquired the most significant digital comic distributor, ComiXology — but no idea what it will actually mean to the comic market, so people have lots of room for speculation. Which is why everyone’s already weighed in on it. I’m reminded of Bruce Sterling’s quote, “Being afraid of monolithic organizations especially when they have computers is like being afraid of really big gorillas especially when they are on fire.” […]

Oni Serializes Archer Coe on ComiXology

Archer Coe and the Thousand Natural Shocks by Jamie S. Rich and Dan Christensen, which I enjoyed reading, will be released as a graphic novel in June. However, in advance of print publication, publisher Oni Press has announced that it will be serialized at ComiXology as 14 digital issues. It’s 99 cents for 17 pages, and future chapters will appear every Tuesday and Thursday. Since print issues don’t make sense any more for a limited-run independent project like this, I […]

MoCCA Fest 2014 Another Success

Under the auspices of the Society of Illustrators, the MoCCA Arts Fest continues to become an ever-better show. Here are some quick thoughts on my time there this year. Brigid Alverson and I roomed together, which was a great way to decompress from the show, sharing notes about discoveries and some great cheese plates. Here she is with Gary Tyrrell, whom we bumped into at show open and then I never saw again. Bummer! He’s always got great insight into […]

Smut Peddler 2 Kickstarter Launched Today; Meets Goal in 6 Hours

The Kickstarter for Smut Peddler 2014 launched this morning, and now, about six hours later, it’s met its $20,000 goal with over 500 backers. But that doesn’t mean you should ignore it. If you’re interested in comics for adults, Smut Peddler is an anthology of woman-centric (created and content-focused) comic book porn/erotica. The book is affordable ($15 for PDF; $30 for print) for hundreds of pages of diverse content. (I helped with submissions, so I know — we aimed to […]
