Squirrel Girl and Friends Coming to TV

Freeform (formerly ABC Family) is planning a Cloak and Dagger TV show, due late next year, as a teen romance drama. Now, they’ve ordered their second Marvel-inspired series. New Warriors is planned as a half-hour comedy, with ten episodes in the first season, also due 2018. It’ll be about six young people learning to be heroes, termed “about-to-be Avengers”, and the only character mentioned so far is Squirrel Girl, a fan favorite. The show runner will be Kevin Biegel, who’s […]

Faith Erin Hicks’ Nameless City Gets a Cartoon

The Nameless City is the first of three books by Faith Erin Hicks set in a diverse fantasy world. The second, The Stone Heart, is out this week. Now comes news from EW.com that Frederator Studios will be animating the trilogy. They’re creating a 12-episode cartoon miniseries with each book getting four episodes, and the first set will be out in fall 2018. I’m not surprised to see this choice for an adaptation — Hicks’ animation background can be seen […]

Comet TV Comes to Streaming Boxes

Comet TV, the network with the aim of bringing “audiences everywhere the best in science fiction and horror programming” has taken another step towards that goal by releasing apps for Roku (series 3 and 4) and Apple TV (generation 4). Previously, they were an antenna broadcast network, available in over 100 markets and through www.comettv.com. As a proud cable cord-cutter, I’ve been watching some of the goofy Comet offerings over the air, but the app, along with access to the […]

Boomerang Streaming Service Coming for Animation

I applaud Warner Bros. for embracing the streaming market. For those who can’t or won’t pay inflated cable TV prices, Warner has created services like FilmStruck (by TCM) to bring content to subscribers directly. Now they’ve got one for animation fans. Boomerang (also the name of one of their cartoon cable networks) will launch later this spring as a domestic premium video subscription service from Warner Bros. and Time Warner’s Turner. The “massive Hanna-Barbera, Looney Tunes, and MGM animation library […]

Are You Going to Visit Riverdale?

The Archie Comics-inspired Riverdale TV series debuts this Thursday, January 26, at 9 Eastern/8 Central on The CW. Unlike how most people think of the comics, it’s not a goofy comedy about a guy tripping over things while trying to date two girls. It’s being heavily compared to Twin Peaks, with a strong noir flavor. The “Moment” trailer, in which Cheryl Blossom vows to avenge the death of her twin Jason, doesn’t look like the comics at all… but very […]

A New Science Fiction TV Network Giveaway

I didn’t realize that there was a science fiction TV network available for free. I quit watching SyFy when I gave up cable, but now there’s COMET TV, “dedicated to sci-fi entertainment offering popular favorites, cult classics, and undiscovered gems”. Use the link to find out where they’re available in your area; mine has them both over-the-air and through cable. Right now, they’re showing Stargate: Atlantis, The Outer Limits, Dead Like Me, and the classic Mystery Science Theater 3000, among […]
