The Exhibition of Girls’ Excuses

At TCAF one year, I think it was, I picked up this adorable small art book from the artist who goes by Question No. 6. (You may know her from her variant covers for the Sherlock and Doctor Who comics.) The Exhibition of Girls’ Excuses is a series of retro-styled pinups, thankfully labeled in English, about annoyances women face. Here are a few I particularly liked: And this one seems particularly timely: I wish I could tell you where to […]

Wonder Woman Series Coming to Blu-ray

Coming at the end of July is the release of Wonder Woman: The Complete Series, all three seasons of the 1970s TV show, remastered for Blu-ray. The show starred Lynda Carter as Diana Prince, who in season one was Wonder Woman in the 1940s (and aired on ABC). Seasons two and three (on CBS) moved the show to the then-current 70s, with Steve Trevor (Lyle Waggoner) now the son of the previous and the two working as some kind of […]

Scooby-Doo Origin Movie Goes to Home Video

Warner Bros. has announced that Scoob!, the first full-length animated Scooby-Doo movie intended for theaters, will instead be available through home video services beginning on May 15. Or, as they put it, “available for both Premium Video On Demand (PVOD) and for premium digital ownership in the U.S. and Canada… while theaters remain closed due to the current global health crisis.” I don’t know why “premium” keeps popping up, unless it’s to make us feel better about the pricing, or […]

San Diego Comic-Con Cancelled for First Time

It’s the smart thing to do, but the San Diego Comic-Con, which was to be held this year July 23-26, has been officially cancelled. I’m not at all surprised, since California has locked down a lot of public gatherings and said that approach would continue through the summer. The ironic element is that this was the first year I was planning to go since — I don’t remember if it was 2003 or 2005 I last went. It’s been that […]

What Manga Publishers Are Doing During the Pandemic

During the pandemic quarantine, book publishing is mostly continuing and comic book publishing has mostly ceased. Which lead to me wondering what the manga publishers are doing. They have very little dependence on the comic market stores, so that shutdown doesn’t matter to them. But many bookstores are also closed, reducing the ability to reach customers, and manga series are serialized, making it important to keep readers hooked. The publishers, in general, are slowing down their release schedule and converting […]

A Bit of Comic Direct Market History

Milton Griepp, who runs icv2.com, used to own Capital City Distribution, which was headquartered here in Madison, Wisconsin. Turns out that CCD was formed 40 years ago this month, and Milton has posted a brief reminiscence of the company’s history. (KC worked for CCD in customer service early on for a few years, by the way.) CCD was one of the biggest comic direct market (selling from publishers to comic stores) distributors, until DC’s decision to go exclusive with Diamond […]

Sample Dark Horse Comics for Free

In this time of trouble, it’s great to have more entertainment options. Dark Horse has made “more than 80 first issue comics, along with a handful of full graphic novels” available to read for free via their digital outlet. Best of all, they’re doing it without requiring a credit card or any obligation, just an email address. Offer good through April 30. There’s an extensive kids section, including Disney’s Frozen and Scary Godmother; a “Mignolaverse” grouping (featuring Hellboy); a horror […]
