Watch Retro Anime for Free (With Ads and App)

A new service, Retro Crush, has just launched that promises classic anime streaming for free (with ads). You can access them by downloading their app for iOS, Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, or Google Play. I haven’t bothered to check yet, but their publicity claims they have, among other viewings: Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer (based on Rumiko Takahashi’s series about an alien girl in a tiger-stripe bikini) Black Jack: The Movie (based on Osamu Tezuka’s bonkers series about a […]

Viz Originals to Adapt Beloved YA Novel

Viz Originals, an imprint from the manga publisher announced last year as an outlet for “original graphic novels developed by manga-inspired creators”, has made public news of one of its first titles. Due out in October is a graphic novel adaptation of Rainbow Rowell’s novel Fangirl. (I love this book. I had her autograph it in Chicago this year.) Fangirl: The Manga will be adapted by Sam Maggs (The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy) and illustrated by Gabi Nam (who […]

A Whole Bunch of Dollar Digital Manga This Week

Two sales you might want to take advantage of, if you’re looking for reading material and don’t mind digital for your manga. The first is a whole flock of first volumes for 99 cents each. 270, to be exact, from Kodansha and Vertical. (Need some ideas? Here are all my Kodansha manga reviews.) This is a great way to sample the start of a series! Sale runs through April 13. Secondly, there’s a comiXology originals sale that includes the entire […]

Bloodshot Available on Digital Already

The pandemic situation, and the resulting closure of most public spaces, means usual rules are out the window. Traditionally, a movie wouldn’t be available for home viewing until three months after its theatrical release, in order for the various movie theaters (first-run, discount, etc.) to make money. Annoying one’s distribution partners doesn’t allow for good ongoing business relationships. However, now that movie theaters have been closed, that no longer applies. Bloodshot came out in theaters on March 13, right before […]

Get a Free Digital Copy of a TwoMorrows Magazine

To help encourage and support people staying at home during this period of self quarantine, comic magazine publisher TwoMorrows has announced that they will provide a free digital copy of one of their magazines. Visit their webstore, and enter the redemption code “stayhome” during checkout. That provides a $4.99 credit, which should cover a digital edition. Or it can be used as credit towards a print purchase. (One use per customer, through March 31.) So stay home, stay well, and […]

What Will Happen to Free Comic Book Day?

With all that’s going on in the world, and the recommendation that people should avoid groups of more than 50 for the next eight weeks (which means through early May) to avoid infection, the question arose: what does that mean for Free Comic Book Day? Comics’ national holiday, scheduled for May 2 this year, often attracts crowds bigger than that, although not all at the same time. And it’s a big moneymaker for many shops, with sales and guest appearances […]

The Five Years Later Legion Collected After All

A year and a half ago, there was news that the first 13 issues of the “five years later” run of The Legion of Super-Heroes — the version of the series that began in 1989 — would be collected as a $50 hardcover. A year ago, the project was cancelled. Now, dedicated fans get another chance. Only The Legion of Super-Heroes Five Years Later Omnibus is now a hardcover with over 1400 pages, due out August 12, and priced at […]

What Did You Eat Yesterday? Available Digitally

My favorite current manga series, Fumi Yoshinaga’s What Did You Eat Yesterday?, will become available for digital purchase this coming Tuesday, March 17. It’s a wonderful read, about a middle-aged gay couple. One partner is a hairstylist, the other a lawyer, and the lawyer cooks something every chapter. These aren’t fancy dishes, but everyday meals based around grocery bargains or seasonal dishes or what will use up leftovers or what brings back good memories. There are 14 volumes available in […]
