Marvel’s Black Panther: The Illustrated History of a King Coming Next Month

Just in time for the Black Panther movie in February, Insight Editions will be releasing Marvel’s Black Panther: The Illustrated History of a King: The Complete Comics Chronology (written by Dennis Culver) next month. The character was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and writer-artist Jack Kirby and first appeared in 1966 in Fantastic Four #52. I’m curious to learn more about the King of Wakanda, because I’m highly anticipating the movie. The only time I read much of the comics […]

A Particularly Timely Panel From Bombshells United

The panel below is from Bombshells United #6 (digital version), art by Luciano Vecchio, written by Marguerite Bennett. The story involves Wonder Woman vs. Clayface, who represents “land and blood” bigots. I thought this statement, My shame is that I could not know compassion for those unlike me… not unless I saw what they saw, felt what they felt, and beheld it through their eyes. spoken here by the reformed Baroness Paula von Gunther, was particularly timely. Although set in […]

Additional Fence Variant Cover Announced

Last month, I wrote about the upcoming Fence, a series by C.S. Pacat and Johanna the Mad debuting from Boom! next month. At the time, they had announced two covers, one by the series artist and one by watercolorist Kevin Wada. (Both are visible at that link.) A new variant has now been made available by someone likely to be appreciated by the comic’s target audience. The below variant is by Shanen Pae, the artist behind the Dream Daddy video […]

How Many Flaming Birds Do You Want to See? Marvel Variant Covers in December

When all else fails, bring back a beloved “no, really, they’re dead for real and always” character. Marvel, as part of its Legacy initiative to beg for those old fans who still have the habit of dropping too much money at the comic shop weekly to come back, is putting out Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey at the end of December, a “new epic featuring the return of adult Jean Grey”. (She’s been dead for a decade, which […]

The Harcourt Legacy Preview

The Harcourt Legacy is a three-issue miniseries with a classic premise: a dying elderly relative wills magic to an unsuspecting, outcast teen. But I like the attitude on display in the art and writing, based on these preview poges. Plus, I have a fondness for snarky girls named Violet. It’s written by Brendan Cahill and illustrated by Jason Federhenn. Here’s the setup: Occultist Edward Harcourt is dying, and he wants to pass along his secrets. His intended heir is his […]

Titan Comics Seizes on Current Events to Promote Fighting American Launch

On July 4, Titan Comics (a British company, interestingly) released the following teaser poster to promote the October launch of Fighting American, a property created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in 1954. It’s clearly intended to tweak Marvel Comics, whose big summer event is titled “Secret Empire” and features Captain America brainwashed into being part of a Nazi-inspired group. Fighting American was created by the men who originally created Captain America because they no longer owned their first idea. […]
