Wonder Woman: Virginia Madsen on Comics, Gender, Parenting

The latest in the series of studio-produced interviews promoting the direct-to-video Wonder Woman animated movie has been released: it’s a conversation with Virginia Madsen, who voices Queen Hippolyta. Since it’s promotional, there’s not a lot of striking content, although it’s cute to see Madsen talk about her teenage son and his take on things. I did find these two exchanges, near the end, interesting: Question: Were/are you a comic-book reader? Madsen: I was not a comic book reader, but my […]

Swingtown

I really liked Swingtown. I’m not particularly nostalgic for the 70s, especially not the chemically created clothing fabrics, but I enjoyed the characters and their interactions, and for a show that included wife-swapping, the messages were surprisingly positive. But before I get to those, the basics: Swingtown ran from June through September 2008 on CBS. It featured three couples in the summer of 1976: The Millers, played by Molly Parker and Jack Davenport. They married young, just out of high […]

Leverage: The Miracle Job

Tonight, TNT airs the Leverage episode “The Miracle Job” at 10 PM Eastern. It’s not a Christmas episode as such — too early in the show’s run for that, although I’d love to see one — but it does deal with a case involving a church, St. Nicholas, and redemption. D.B. Sweeney plays a priest, an old friend of Nate’s (Timothy Hutton) whose sanctuary is about to be demolished by a developer building a mall. The team decides to try […]

Leverage

So, did you check out Leverage on Sunday night? The second episode, “The Homecoming Job”, airs tonight at 10 PM on TNT with this description: “Leverage Consulting & Associates opens for business as the crew reunites to help a reservist who’s been wounded in Iraq by private military contractors.” The mercenaries are refusing to pay for his medical care, so the team gets involved. I was pleasantly surprised by it, enjoying it enough to keep watching. Timothy Hutton does a […]

Wonder Woman Animated Movie Update

Before the Wonder Woman original animated movie is released March 3, it will have a “big screen premiere” at the New York Comic Con on February 6 at 8:30 PM, followed by a panel discussion with the film’s cast and crew. I’m still not sure whether I’ll be able to go to the show this year. I much prefer an April timeframe for visiting the city, but my brother’s living in the area now. Decisions, decisions. Seeing the film (and […]

Punisher: War Zone Flops

As reported by Tom McLean, Punisher: War Zone is considered a failure. It had the worst opening ever for a Marvel-related movie, at $4 million over the weekend. I feel no glee at this. It wasn’t my kind of movie, but for those who like testosterone-soaked bullet-fests, it seemed watchable. I think McLean has it right, that it’s a matter of timing. December films are expected to be blockbuster crowd-pleasers, family films, or prestige pics; this is none of the […]

Lost Season 4

Review by KC Carlson In which a creative compromise set an endpoint and revitalized a meandering TV series. Lost: Season 4 (6 DVD set, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, $59.99) set some very high standards for the future of scripted network programming — still somewhat in doubt over the shortsighted dominance of low-cost “reality” programming at the big networks — as well as once again demonstrating that the DVD is the perfect format for shows like Lost, which improve with — […]

What Bolt Could Have Been: American Dog

Here’s the sad story of American Dog. Chris Sanders, co-director of Lilo & Stitch, my favorite animated film, originally developed American Dog for Disney until he was fired. Under John Lasseter, AD then became the current Bolt. (Thus guaranteeing I won’t see it.) The last straw, according to the link above, is that original creator Sanders is nowhere mentioned in The Art of Bolt coffee table book. In response, that site has posted their own art gallery of concept art […]
