Spirit Promotion Continues

Thanksgiving weekend is the traditional opening of the blockbuster Christmas movie season, which means not only new films but new trailers and more promotion. The Spirit, for example, which opens on Christmas Day, has released a new poster, shown here, as well as a couple of videos. There’s a mashup video combining elements of the trailers from The Spirit, Punisher: War Zone (due December 5), and Transporter 3 (out on Wednesday). Pretty cool, with neat music. You’ll probably want to […]

Hellboy

Since Hellboy 2: The Golden Army comes out on DVD next week, it’s time for me to watch the first movie, Hellboy, for the first time. Overall, I liked it, but I don’t have much to say about it. It’s very true to the comic book in its visuals, perhaps just as much as Sin City, although in a much more subtle way. Like the comic book, the point is what you see, not so much the story, which is […]

John Rogers’ New Project: Leverage

I enjoyed Blue Beetle largely because of John Rogers’ writing. He’s not writing it any more. (Matthew Sturges (House of Mystery) has taken over.) Instead, Rogers has moved to television, with a new TNT series called Leverage. He’s executive-producing this “action-packed drama” along with Dean Devlin (Independence Day). Timothy Hutton stars as the leader of a team of thieves and con artists who steal from those who deserve it in order to help those not so well off. It’s got […]

Max Headroom

I wasn’t old enough to appreciate how good Max Headroom was when it was on the first time. Now, having recently rewatched the 14 existing episodes, the question of the day is: why isn’t this on DVD?!?! Although it ran from 1987-1988, it’s a remarkably modern show. Visually, its Brazil-meets-Blade Runner approach, using older technology (like manual typewriter keyboards) to suggest the future, is watchable without seeming outdated. In terms of content, the plots tackled still-timely subjects like identity in […]

New Punisher Poster Has 3-D Interest

Punisher: War Zone will have a lenticular poster, shown here, that will start appearing in movie theaters tomorrow. According to the press agent, “the gun frame actually mounts onto the outside of the lightbox, and it will appear like this in theaters.” (Lenticular means that it appears to move depending on which angle you view, like those Cracker Jack prizes.) The movie will be released December 5. It’s a reboot, a fresh start, not a sequel, starring Ray Stevenson instead […]

Iron Man DVD (Review)

I’ve been looking forward to the Ultimate 2-disc Edition of the Iron Man DVD since it was announced in August. I think, though, that my anticipation backfired. My love for the movie hasn’t changed, but I found many of the special features weren’t as exciting as I had hoped. DVD Choices For me, the appeal of the film was the character, the man inside the suit, but that’s not the direction followed here. This was Marvel’s first in-house production after […]

No Batman DVD – The Detailed Story

For years fans have wanted a complete collection of the 1960s Batman TV series on DVD. Although you can find bootleg sets out there — just search “Batman TV DVD” on Google, and you’ll see plenty for $50-60 — many would willingly pay well for clean copies with nice extras, and the principals are clearly available to participate. Reportedly, the rights are tied up between Fox (which made the show and owns the episodes) and Warner Bros (which owns the […]
